Friday's BOLD LAW...from KW MAPS NLP Coach George Gillas...

If you ask people, “What were some of the best years of your life?” they will often tell you it was in high school or college. We were young. We felt free of the encumbrances of being an adult, we went to school, had lots of friends, played sports or other extra-curricular activities, and in college we did all that… and partied. We were free.

And, if you look back on those times right now; isn’t it true that you stuck to a pretty rigid schedule? You were up early for classes – or sometimes morning runs, workouts, or rehearsals. You had after school activities including weekend sports, competitions, or concerts. You woke up at the same time every day.

Went to your scheduled classes. Planned enough time for your next class or activity, then came home to homework, dinner, a little play time then bed… only to get up and repeat. And you did this for at least 12 years… perhaps 16 or more.

You were regimented. You were scheduled and you stuck to your schedule religiously because everything on there was important to you. Oh sure… there were classes you didn’t like, practices you didn’t enjoy, professors in college who bored you to near sleep. And you went anyway. Even though you didn’t enjoy the activity – you went. And moreover, you worked hard because you knew it was important. You worked hard so you could perform when it counted.

Who was it important to?

Was it important to you? Probably. You wanted to graduate. You hit the practices because you wanted to be on the starting team. You rehearsed your part for the show or the concert because you wanted to shine. It was also important to your parents – your teachers (after all – they controlled the grade. Talk about accountability) – your coach because they determined if and when you might get to play. Once again accountability.

And with all this strict adherence to schedules, all the pressure of accountability and practice and performance in the classroom and on the field… these were still some of the happiest times of your life.

Because you were “free.”

Some agents still don’t appreciate the power of following a schedule. They want the “freedom” that comes from “winging it.” Yet, this is the person who is up late at night doing paperwork or worried that they haven’t done lead gen and their pipeline is stagnant because they are too busy saying “yes” to every interruption that comes their way.

Let me ask you, if you are at the beckon call of every prospect and client… if you feel the need to respond to every text within two minutes regardless of what you are doing; who is really controlling you? Freedom comes from you controlling your activities through the flow of time. It is self-management. It is being disciplined to follow your schedule just like you did for all those years in school. The only major adult difference is this: You get to set the schedule. And you get to decide what and who to say “no” to! That’s the bonus of being a self-employed adult!

Start small if you must. Decide today to gain control. Be free. And follow your plan for success.

“If you can’t fly then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
