Can you actually grow by doing less?

Can growth ever feel like you are shrinking or holding back? How is it possible that growing as a person to grow your business can sometimes involve doing less? After all – haven’t we learned as kids that we’ll “grow into those shoes… or grow into that varsity position...” Or later, in your early career, “… grow into the job.”

Growth, as we typically know it, seems to involve doing more and more… getting bigger; after all, “If you aren’t growing you are dying” right? Is this the truth? Is growth a function of how much you can take on or is there another way we can grow our business by growing ourselves first?

I’m working with a client now who is in the process of personal growth – by learning to let others fail at their job. Yes – fail. She has taken on so much she should hold the title of “VP of All Things Miscellaneous.”
In her mind growth = more responsibility. The problem is that the organization is now limited by her capacity. And her home life is suffering… along with her health.

My client is coming to grips with the idea that delegating and letting others grow into their role is, in fact, her biggest growth opportunity. It takes growth to know if they fail, the business will continue. It takes growth to trust if they make a mistake, the clients won’t leave you. It takes growth to admit that someone else may actually do the job better than you.

And that can be very scary.

If you don’t grow into leadership so that you delegate and trust the people and systems you have in place; the business will always be limited by your individual capacity. This means – you don’t have a business; you are trading time for dollars.

I remember many years ago being at a national conference and I was managing the top office in a direct sales company. This was long before cell phones. We had a break in the training and young managers ran to the phones to call their office. A select few experienced managers got a chance to relax. We had dedicated, well-trained, trusted staff to run our business while we were gone. We grew into letting go. That’s freedom. That’s peace of mind.

It starts with you and ends with others. Grow into a leader. Grow into a delegator. Grow into a business owner and enjoy the benefits of being an entrepreneur.
