Friday BOLD LAW from KW MAPS NLP Coach George Gillas... " Don't mistake movement for achievement "
Don’t mistake movement for achievement
Movement is often confused with achievement because we typically achieve something in our activities. The question is: what is the something that you are achieving? Is it in your 20% of KRAs that make a difference or is it something minor that gives you a momentary sense of accomplishment?
It’s the minor accomplishments that steal away our time. When we get distracted from important activities like lead gen to answer a question or solve a problem for someone else, we feel accomplished. We get a little hit of dopamine in our brain and we feel good. That little feel-good shot is highly addictive and can lead to the short-term feeling of accomplishment even though we’ve done nothing to move our business forward.
One thing you can do to stop this is clearly define what you are moving toward. What do you want? What are you closer to achieving when you focus on your 20% activities? Or… what do you need to do in the way of activities to move you toward your goal?
We are either moving toward or away from something. Moving away energy is good to get you started: “I don’t want to be strapped for cash… I don’t want to be tired all day… I’m sick of feeling sick…”
The problem with away-from motivation is that it doesn’t last long. It will get you started but it will not sustain you because once you get comfortable (money in the bank, energized from exercise, healthy) you have nothing to move away from any more and self-sabotage kicks in to put you right back where you were!
It’s critical that you define what you want so you are constantly moving towards that. And what you want cannot be “I don’t want ___” because that is once again focusing your mind on away-from motivation.
Figure out what you don’t want any more, that’s fine. Then, detail a picture of what you do want instead. Make a clear picture of it. Define the actions (20% that will give you 80% of your desired results) and focus your energy on those. Have the will power to say ‘no’ to distractions because you recognize the payoff of accomplishment of your goal is more rewarding than the little feel-good that comes with distractions. Decide. Act. Maintain. Succeed.
