There is no try – only do.

When it comes to performance and results, how big or subtle is the difference between trying and doing? Is the amount of effort the same? How much more does it take to do, rather than just to try? What if one major difference is simply focus? What if, trying with a bit more focus, actually becomes doing?

Have you ever shot a handgun, rifle, or shotgun? If not, my bet is you’ve seen enough movies to know that the projectile that leaves the barrel travels at an enormous rate of speed. Many rounds are even supersonic

.

A cartridge is comprised of the casing, primer, bullet (the part that leaves the barrel), and powder. I want to talk about the powder because that’s the stuff that makes things go ‘bang.’ If you pull the bullet out of the casing, pour the powder into a line – ore even in a pile – and light it; all you’ll get is a flash, smoke, and some smoldering. It is over, literally, in a flash.

There is no bang. There is no bullet traveling at 1000 fps. There is just a flash. Yet, when the powder is focused in a brass case with a primer (that ignites the powder with a small spark) on one end and the bullet on the other. You have something quite different. You have focused the energy. And, when that cartridge is placed in a properly operating gun with a barrel to expel the bullet – you have dramatically increased the focus of that energy.

Consider, the energy is the same whether the powder is lit on the sidewalk or the cartridge is placed in a gun and fired. The mass of the powder is the same. It ignites and rapidly burns into gas. Either it dissipates into the air or it propels a projectile down range. The energy is the same.

Decide if you are a flash of powder or you are a focused force. Think about the energy you’ve expended when you tried… and think about when you actually did. My guess is it’s about the same. The difference is how much you focused that energy.

The difference is focus.
