Advice from KW MAPS NLP Coach George Gillas for today's BOLD LAW ...

When is it a good thing to want?

To want something isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Do you want your kids to be happy and healthy? Do you want to enjoy your vacation with your loved ones? Do you want civil unrest to cease? What are some things that you want?

What is the context of your use of the word – the intention behind it? Can the fact that you want to be healthy and look good in a bathing suit help to limit your junk food intake and motivate you to work out? When you want to increase your conversion ratio on listing appointments does that drive you to take action and get the training you lack?

If “want” does these things for you… what’s the problem?

Word by themselves are largely meaningless. Context and intention matter. I was on a call with a client today who says he “wants to make database calls” yet his actions to date contradict his words… he contacted 4 people – last week. Yes – four.

There’s a rule in the NLP world: calibrate on behavior. A person is not their behavior and their behavior is indicative of how they are processing their world. Behavior is an outside-looking-in peek at their thinking. So, if you want something, what are you going to do about it?

Gary Keller writes that most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in five years. What do you want? What are you going to do about it? What is the first step, the first domino towards getting it done? When will you take that small step? How will you feel knowing that your behavior is lining up with your desire and you are now moving towards that outcome?

Want without actions does come from lack. It is self-pity. It is victim thinking. It puts you at the effect of the world rather than at the cause of your own success.

Want + no action = lack. Want + action = abundance.

Next time you hear yourself or someone else saying that they want something ask: Why is that important to you? What will having that mean for you? How would you feel if you had that right now? What is the first thing you could do immediately to add action to the want?

I want my clients to succeed. I want all the readers to get value from these articles. I want to improve my skills as a coach and as a guy who writes for Don every Friday. Take the actions related to the want so it’s not ever coming from lack.
